The Most Expensive Chair

Is it true that sky’s the limit? Is there a boundary for spending too much money for a piece of wood? For some, yes. But there actually is a chair that is so expensive it will amaze everyone because it exceeds all the limits — worth of money, outrageous luxury, and ridiculously expensive furniture. The Dragons chair is the most expensive chair ever designed and ever sold in the history of mankind. Yes, you are reading it right. The Dragons chair is the most expensive piece of wood and leather as of 2012, surely the price will knock your precious head off.

The most expensive chair belongs to late and great French fashion designer and the founder of the eponymous YSL luxury brand, none other than Yves Saint Laurent. Yves Saint Laurent died in June of 2008 just a few days after marrying his partner and co-founder, Pierre Bergä. The most expensive chair right here formerly belonged to a Paris-based art dealer before finding its way into the hands of Saint Laurent and Bergä. Reportedly, that same art dealer is the person who paid ten times the chair’s estimated value to procure it at a Christie’s auction. The auction was held at Paris’ Grand Palais where it broke the record.

The chair was designed by an Irish designer — Eileen Gray between the years 1917 and 1919. The Dragons Chair is 24 inch in height. It is one of Eileen Gray’s masterpieces and was expected to sell for only €2-3 millions. But lo and behold, on February 24th at Paris’ Grand Palais, the most expensive chair in the world was sold for €21.9 million. Ready for the conversion, pal? The Dragons Chair was sold at 27.8 million US dollars.
