Most Expensive Private Islands

Most of us cannot afford to buy private islands. Such activity has always been only for the uber wealthy. Some islands, however, are up for rent for the weekend. Yes, one can actually rent one whole island for a weekend getaway or when one just wants to play Robinson Crusoe for a day or two. Then again, private island rental still isn’t cheap.
Here are a few private islands that are either for sale for several arms and ten legs or are for rent for basically a few noses and ears.

The Isla de sa Ferradura is a 14-acre private island in the Bay of San Miguel off the North coast of Ibiza, Spain. The island resort affords  visitors a breathtaking view of the Mediterranean Sea. It is often labeled as the most beautiful island in the Mediterranean and is completely developed with a hacienda, classy accommodation and amenities. This private island is for sale for US$39 million. If that price is a tad over your budget, then you could just simply rent the whole island for a week for US$230,000.

Another exclusive private island reserved for the rich and famous is Necker Island, owned by Virgin Records mogul Richard Branson. The island is located in the British Virgin Islands, to the north of Virgin Gorda, one of the country’s larger islands. Necker’s 74 acres are surrounded by beautiful turquoise waters, coral reefs and gorgeous sandy beaches. This island is the getaway of choice by privacy-hungry rockstars and Hollywood stars. Necker is normally hired privately for up to 28 guests, but during selected ‘Celebration Weeks’ during the year, couples or singles can book individual rooms and share the island ‘house party’ style. The rate is around US$56,000 to rent the whole island for a night, but a minimum stay of five nights is required.

Nygard Cay, lying on the tip of Lyford Cay in the Bahamas, offers a different kind of treat. This private luxury resort includes replicas of Mayan Temples,  private tennis and volleyball courts, beaches, pool, disco club, state-of-the-art home theatre, and more than 20 themed cabanas. Peter Nygard, owner of Nygard Cay, architecturally designed and built this Robinson Crusoe playground in 1987. From then on, the island has been featured in many TV shows and has seen many celebrity guests. This themed island will set you back US$42,000 a day to rent.

Indeed, you must have loads of cash to have an island all to yourself. In this world of interconnectivity, the price of total privacy has become so steep. Well, the next best thing would be to lock up in your room, ignore the noise outside, and just watch an old Robinson Crusoe movie.
